Photography Website Makeover: Jessica Pettway

JP_Opening_01

A photography student at School of Visual Arts in New York, Jessica Pettway makes photographic works that take ubiquitous objects to new heights with candy-hued color blocks and a push-and-pull play of hard masculine lines with feminine curves. Her work pushes boundaries of the themes of gender and man versus nature in unexpected ways, elevating still life and portrait photography out of a staid genre and into a realm of unpredictability. Her website presence was previously relegated to a very simple website which didn’t align with her photographic aesthetic, and a Tumblr blog where her personality shines through with roving images that twist and turn though a meandering homepage as a diaristic reflection of creativity. She was in need of a site to complement her multimedia blog, while allowing the energetic images to speak for themselves through a cohesive and clean navigation.

Thus, we chose Pettway for our second website makeover, sponsored by Squarespace. We spoke to the artist about the creation of her new site — which she says was astonishingly intuitive to make — and reveal before-and-after shots of her website during its revamp.

For our latest group show, we asked you to submit photographs taken between sun-down and sun-up. Curated by Feature Shoot Editor-in-Chief Alison Zavos, the resulting collection expresses the possibilities of nighttime photography. Spanning booming metropolises and remote wildernesses alike, the winning images take us on a journey from melancholy to joy to serenity and back again.

The master Pictorialist Alfred Stieglitz once wrote, “Wherever there is light, one can photograph.” Night photographers push this fact to its limit by making picture with only the tiniest flickers of illumination. Paradoxically, it’s sometimes the darkest images that shine the brightest.

When it comes to websites, it’s safe to say that photographers are held to a higher standard. While other businesspeople can sometimes get away with looking less than polished online, image is everything in the world of photography, and if even the most expertly shot portfolio isn’t presented in an attractive way, it won’t leave a lasting impression.

27 ‘Off the Wall’ Photographs Make for Our Weirdest Ever Group Show

For our latest group show, we gave you free rein to delve into all things weird, absurd, and downright crazy. Curated by Gabriel H. Sanchez, Photo Essay Editor at BuzzFeed, the winning collection reveals just how varied and subjective our theme of “off the wall” can be. From dolls having breakfast in bed to a Tetris piece going for a casual stroll down the block, these images can each be taken either as downright hilarious or as a strangely sobering depiction of the human condition. In some cases, we’re not sure whether to laugh or cry, and that perhaps is the definition of “off the wall” photographs: images so delightfully bizarre that they elicit often intense and sometimes contradictory responses.

Congratulations to top three winners Aline Smithson, David Barry, and John Gribben, who will each receive a one year subscription to Squarespace, an online publishing platform designed with photographers in mind. With award-winning design, domains, commerce, hosting, and 24/7 support, Squarespace helps photographers discover more ways to market themselves and expand their business. New subscribers to Squarespace can now use the code “FS15″ to receive 10% off their website. Click here to start a free 14-day trial.

From performance artists to Wall Street tycoons, everyone has a bit of quirk lingering inside; it’s just a matter of how much we’re willing to show in public. For our latest group show, we’re giving you a free pass to bare all and embrace all things offbeat, idiosyncratic, or just plain weird. That’s right, we’re looking for your most “Off the Wall” photographs, images that (literally or figuratively) are just too bizarre to to be confined only to a gallery wall.

This group show will be curated by Gabriel H. Sanchez, Photo Essay Editor at BuzzFeed, who has an eye for everything from the comical to the profound to all things viral. The top three winners will receive a free one-year subscription to Squarespace, the intuitive website publishing platform that makes it simple for photographers to build creative and professional sites with their combo of award-winning designs, hosting, domains, and commerce. Selected photos will run on the Feature Shoot website and be promoted through our social media channels. Copyright remains with the photographer.
