Autumns
We have all downloaded that ocean scene or forest desktop background, so saturated with color and disreality, yet somehow alluring enough to draw us in. Anastasia Samoylova uses the Internet’s infinite resource of nature imagery to assemble temporary sculptures for her series Landscape Sublime. Playing with ideas of the human desire to experience something beautiful beyond themselves, Samoylova examines this concept through popular screen-based photographs and the transformation that occurs when they take on a more physical form. The photographer downloads various images and prints them out, eventually sculpting groups of photos into vivid, geometric still lifes. The ephemeral installations are then photographed, subverting the original intent of the images that make up Samoylova’s work. Here the wilderness takes on an unusual form, changed but familiar, a totem for the surreal wonder of nature.
