Continuum: Doug DuBois and Aaron Blum is the first in a series of exhibitions that explore mentorships and influences in contemporary photography, pairing two photographers together that share a mentor-mentee relationship. Selections from New York-based photographer and professor Doug DuBois‘ series My Last Day at Seventeen will be shown alongside Pittsburgh-based photographer Aaron Blum’s series Born and Raised. Blum is DuBois’ former graduate student at Syracuse University.

DuBois’ work revolves around teens living in a housing estate in Cobh, County Cork on the southwest coast of Ireland, during the current economic downturn, while Blum revisits his hometown of New Martinsville, a small rural community in the Appalachian range of West Virginia. The pairing of the two makes sense—while their styles are different, there is a similar sensibility in their capture of place and people.

The exhibition is currently on view at Silver Eye Center for Photography in Pittsburgh and will run through July 20, 2013.
