With her most recent book, entitled I love to dress like I am coming from somewhere and I have a place to go, photographer Flurina Rothenberger has set out to highlight and embrace the contradictions, inconsistencies, and similarities inherent in any landscape as large as Africa. While this perspective is common and canonized in Western portrayals of the United States—photographers like William Eggleston and Robert Frank famously portrayed personal visions of an incredibly varied, conflicting, exciting, and banal landscape—I love to dress suggests a continued lack of global exposure to similar visions of African countries.

The Quiet Aftermath of the Hungarian Chemical Spill That Covered a Region in Toxic Red Sludge

As with all major national disasters, the Ajka alumina plant spill in Hungary was extensively photographed. The incident was politically complex, emotionally charged, and visually stunning, attracting reporters and photographers to the site where a million cubic meters of toxic red sludge had devastated the Hungarian landscape. Helicopters hovered overhead to capture surreal aerial shots and mud-drenched animals were photographed dead in the streets, but of all the images taken during the flood and in its wake, Peter Kollanyi’s stand out.

As he photographed his lover and close friend in the winterized bare-bones of a luxurious summer home, Cesar Chavez Lechowick created a body of work that is both lyrical and conceptually complex, both natural and theatrical. Shot over the course of numerous trips, Anthony and Cleopatra depicts the unraveling of the threesome’s collective and individual relationships. Though the nature and state of these relationships is not always explicit, layers of allusions to pop culture, classical art, and mid-20th century cinema express the subtle tensions that develop within the group.
