Australian photographer Greg Briggs scours every crack and cranny to find the city’s least acknowledged laborers in Melbourne Cleaners. Shot over a period of 6 months, each image captures the unseen workforce of local museums, theaters and historic hotels. The frequently underpaid city cleaners work long hours early in the morning or late into the night, becoming intimately acquainted with each artifact and window ledge of Melbourne’s landmarks. Here massive spaces feel strangely empty in an environment usually flooded with visitors, leaving Brigg’s figures to linger stoicly amongst the fine art and exotic taxidermy. An ongoing exploration of a vital vocation, Melbourne Cleaners shines a light on the solitary stars of the city and their invisible efforts that keep it humming.
