Photo du Jour: Contemporary Witchcraft

WD001b

Though modernized medicine has been available for sometime, in the slums of Uganda there still exists a quiet, but profound belief in the spiritual. Photographer Daniel Ali spent time in Kampala, Uganda capturing the witch doctors and traditional herbalists who continue to minister to the community with their own methods of healing in The Modernity of Witchcraft. For Ali, the most curious part was the persistent practice despite the increasingly contemporary society. “I witnessed middle class couples leaving after appointments, heard rumours the president of Uganda had his own witch doctor and to look at the doctors themselves their appearance and behaviour gave nothing away. All rituals happened in the privacy of their respective shrines behind closed doors or curtains.”
