7 Reasons to Love the OnePlus 7 Pro Camera

I consider myself a somewhat unusual breed of photographer. While I once was an aspiring photographer with a passion for taking my own photos, about a decade ago I transitioned to the other side of the lens (so to speak) and founded Feature Shoot as a way to showcase the amazing work of other photographers I was coming across.

These days, the act of taking photos is almost like therapy for me. It’s a meditative state. It represents a time and place where I can stop and smell the roses. I mean that literally: most of my own work revolves around flowers – perhaps a bee buzzing around a flower, or even a reflection of a bee and a flower. Not very original – I know – but that’s not my point.

For the last few years, my camera of choice has been whatever has been available on my phone. It’s convenient, and it does not require me to think a lot. I can fully immerse myself in the subject matter without breaking concentration or having to worry too much about settings.

At the same time, I am a photo editor. So I have spent countless hours on meticulous color correction and retouching. Image quality matters to me – a lot.

When OnePlus recently invited me to Taipei to test out their new camera on the OnePlus 7 Pro, I joined an international group of journalists to learn about their new, updated camera.

One of the first things I discovered was that the OnePlus 7 Pro is aimed at people who, like me, want to be able to take a photograph and have it come out close to perfect without a lot of fuss. I spent the first morning of the trip experimenting with all of the different settings and features of the camera, and I was easily able to find my sweet spot.

Which brings me to the first thing to love about the OnePlus 7 Pro.

1. Intuitive Design
It took me less than a minute to capture shots with great detail and almost perfect exposure. With almost no effort on my part, I was able to work out all of the settings and features of the camera that I needed (as well as some that I didn’t). I opened up the selfie mode and was surprised to have a 16-megapixel selfie camera pop out from the top of the phone.

Not something I see myself using a lot, but a unique feature that I can see benefiting a lot of photographers.

2. Performs Well in Low Light
The OnePlus7 Pro has a “nightscape” mode. However, it often prompted me to hold the phone steady for a few seconds before it took the photo, which, for me, is a deal-breaker. Instead, I took all of my night images using the “photo” mode, which required zero wait time. I’m happy to report that my images still came out clear with low grain.

3. All Screen Display
The fact that I can see my images full screen on the phone is a game-changer. It’s the first all-screen phone out there, so it’s truly a unique find. Plus, the images are ultra-crisp on the 6.7-inch display.

4. 48 Megapixels!
It’s not a secret that more photographers are choosing to use their phones over traditional digital cameras. Camera sales have been falling for the past few years, and smartphone companies are treating professional photographers with total respect (even if they represent a small fraction of their target market). OnePlus is no exception. They’ve upped the game: the camera on the OnePlus 7 Pro boasts 48 Megapixels. With imagery this size, the possibilities are endless for professional photographers and non-professionals alike.

5. What Mode Are You In?
For those interested in more than video, photo, portrait, and nightscape modes, dig a little, and you’ll find advanced settings, such as Pro, Time-lapse, Slow motion, and Panorama. The Pro mode allows photographers to shoot in the beloved RAW file format and also control exposure, shutter speed, and ISO.

6. To Edit or Not To Edit?
Photographers are protective and particular when it comes to color correction. I should know: as a photo editor, I’ve had plenty of photographers insist on doing their own color correction or request final approval of any color changes we made before the images went to print.

I have never had an image come out absolutely perfect the first time with my camera phone, and I’m somewhat old school in that I like to download the images to my desktop and open them in Photoshop to edit.

The OnePlus 7 Pro frees me of this laborious step. Not only are the OnePlus 7 Pro photo editing tools fun to use, but they are also intuitive. Much to my surprise, when I downloaded all of the images from my trip to my desktop, I sometimes preferred the images straight from the phone to those that I had spent time color correcting.

7. Everything You Need (and more, if you want it)
This phone has everything for the amateur photographer (me) and lots more bells and whistles for professionals. What I love most about it is the simplicity of the design. Everything I want to use is right up front. If I decide to get a bit more serious again down the line, then a deeper dive gives me plenty of additional options. The OnePlus 7 Pro meets my needs perfectly.

Disclosure: OnePlus sponsored an education trip to their Image R&D Center in Taiwan. International media, including myself, were flown to Taiwan to learn how OnePlus develops its camera capabilities. OnePlus is not a sponsor of Feature Shoot, and these views are my own.
