Dear Photographer: How Can I Get Appointments with Gallery Owners and Curators?

I’m an editorial photographer that has recently completed a few personal/fine art projects that I’d like to get out to gallery owners and curators.  What is the best way to go about this?  I live in New York.—Anonymous

Dear Photographer: How Can I Go From Shooting Editorial to Advertising Photography?

I’m an independent NYC-based editorial photographer with five years experience and a long list of well known clients. For the last few months, I’ve been working on some personal projects with a commercial feel in an attempt to get some meetings with art buyers and transition into advertising photography. Is this what I should be doing as a first step? Any ideas or suggestions from photographers who have made this leap would be appreciated. —Anonymous

Dear Photographer: When Are Model Releases Necessary?

I’m a documentary/editorial photographer and I’m a bit confused when it comes to model releases. Ninety percent of the time, I do not have subjects sign releases. Publications have never asked me for them when purchasing my images and so far there has been no problem. However, I’ve recently been asked to show some of my work as part of a group show in a gallery. Should I be worried that I don’t have model releases for the images they are wanting to show? Are there any hard and fast rules when it comes to releases that I should be aware of going forward?—Anonymous

Dear Photographer: How Can I Politely Decline Funding Kickstarter Projects?

I am well-connected in the photography industry and therefore receive a lot of emails from my peers asking me to contribute to their Kickstarter projects. I personally feel like 90% of these are vanity projects (Help! I need 30K to make a book of my photographs, etc.) and would much rather give my hard earned money to charity. However, many of these same photographers I see socially at events and/or have business dealings with. Is there a polite way to decline funding these projects? Should I just ignore their emails (even though some send out 4-5 reminders throughout the campaign)?—Anonymous

Dear Photographer: Is Appropriating Someone Else’s Images Breaching Copyright?

I am working on a new series which involves using advertising images that I find online and changing them by adding my own images to them. The images are still recognizable and I didn’t ask permission. Am I breaching copyright?—Anonymous

Dear Photographer: Is Using Images for Marketing Purposes Standard for an Editorial Contract?

I’ve been shooting for a trade magazine in New York for a few years and have a good relationship with the photo editor. My problem is that the company has just changed their contract which now states that they can use my images for marketing purposes without any additional pay or credit. I don’t have many other editorial clients, so I’m wondering if this clause is standard in editorial contracts or if I should try and push back.—Anonymous

Dear Photographer: Have Any Advice on How to Pay State, Federal and Quarterly Taxes?

At the beginning of the year, I made the transition into being a full-time freelance photographer and photo editor. It’s going well- I’ve had steady engaging work and I am loving it! I’ve managed to stay organized: keeping records of income and expenses, saving receipts, and managing invoices. But, I’ve struggled with how to pay state, federal and quarterly taxes. Every time I research it, my head gets so boggled! How the heck does a freelance photographer pay taxes? Help! —Anonymous

Dear Photographer: Should I Move to a Livelier City/Photo Market?

Hello, I have a quick question. I’m always curious about the various markets for photography. I’m an editorial photographer who lives in Oklahoma City (not a great market), and am always musing on moving my family to a livelier city (New York or Los Angeles) where I could possibly get more work. If anyone has made a similar move and has some insights to share I’d be grateful for the advice.—Anonymous

Dear Photographer: I Need Help Finding Self-Publishing Resources for My Photo Book

I’m currently looking to publish a book of my black and white street photographs and don’t know where to start. I have the images ready, but will need some help with the layout. Was thinking of going with a ready-made template (or is that cheesy)? Any resources that you can recommend would be appreciated. —Anonymous

Dear Photographer: How Important is My Artist Statement?

How important is my artist statement and bio and what do I really need to include? I’m not a writer and did not go to art school and I’ve been struggling with this for months. I’ve been thinking of hiring someone to write it for me. Is this done regularly and are there people out there that specialize in artist statements for photographers? —Anonymous
