Underwater Portraits of Children at Play

A successful retoucher and commercial photographer, Alix Martinez never thought to focus her sights upon children until becoming a mother herself. Inspired by their energy, excitement and boundless imaginations, Martinez began to capture kids underwater in a colorful playland of ripples and bubbles. The images are captured in a large pool, making sure both photographer and subject have a clear idea of what they are to do before diving down to grab the shot. Whether dressed as a studious bookworm or a super hero, each child seems to come even more alive when frolicking in the blue. Martinez declares she has as much fun as her subjects, noting that working with kids has taught her patience, spontaneity and how to be silly.
