Albrecht Tübke lives and works in Scwherin, Germany. In this series, Donna, he photographed Italian women of all ages who find it incredibly important to have a Prada bag, RayBan sunglasses, and jeans from Armani. Cosmetic surgery is the standard and a strong influence of fashion is a prominent feature of their appearance. The portraits manage to convey both pride and insecurity.

When I visited Italy, I was always struck by the fact that all of the women are dressed to kill at all times. There, Prada shops are found in small cities the way Old Navy is found in North American malls. They’re the norm, not the exception.
I find it incredibly rude and presumptuous to say that these portraits convey “pride and insecurity”. All I see is women who enjoy dressing up. Despite the patronising text you can see from the photos that each woman in these photographs has a bold and distinctive personal style that doesn’t pander to what other people might find attractive or appropriate.
Why is it assumed that an interest in clothing and fashion is more superficial, consumerist and insecure than an interest in, say, architecture or even photography?
