Morocco: Strawberry and lavender ice cream, mixed berries berry syrup drizzle, turmeric mint leaf garnish

Jonathon Kambouris was born in 1982 and raised outside Detroit, Michigan. Growing up, he had a strict balance of suburban normalcy with strong roots to the inner-city of downtown Detroit. He moved to New York in 2001 to study photography at Parsons The New School for Design. Since then, he’s been shooting many editorial and commercial assignments, while keeping a strong emphasis on personal work.

This work was inspired by a New York Times story, also shot by Kambouris, and the inspiration for the ingredients and nail design were from different countries from around the world.

Mishka Henner is a photographer and artist living and working in Manchester, England. He operates in the genres of social documentary and appropriation art and embraces the self-published artist’s book as a means of transmitting his work. His works have been published and commissioned by international print media including Der Spiegel, the Independent, and the Telegraph Magazine and his artist’s book, Winning Mentality was acquired by the Tate Gallery in 2010. His editorial work is represented by Panos Pictures and he is a member of the ABC Artists Book Cooperative.

About this project, he writes: ‘No Man’s Land explores the margins of urban and rural environments in Europe as experienced by what appear to be women soliciting sex, all captured by Google Street View cameras. Sourcing locations from online where men share local knowledge on the whereabouts of sex workers, these areas were then visited online and re-framed using the Street View cameras.

‘The Street View project heralds a new age of street-level cartography, offering a vast visual archive ready to be mined by photographers seeking to make sense of our physical and social environment. Significantly, it combines three key features of our age: the dominance of the car, the accessibility of the internet, and the ubiquity of camera technology. Roaming the world capturing millions of images indexed only according to location, the unauthored and mechanical function of Street View challenges a vocabulary and grammar of documentary photography often tied to notions of authorship, authenticity and technical craft. In navigating between online communities and the visual records on offer, Henner describes himself as an aggregator of sorts, finding the visual means with which to represent a number of cultural and social issues revealed by the technology’.

Nikita Gale, Atlanta

Nikita Gale Jack Preston

Nikita Gale is a self-taught conceptual artist and photographer based in Atlanta, Georgia. Nikita has a BA in Anthropology from Yale University and has exhibited in numerous group shows throughout Atlanta. In 2010, she presented her debut solo show, ‘BOOLESH1T’ at Atlanta’s Mint Gallery. Gale primarily shoots 35mm film. Her work has appeared in a number of international magazines and online publications including Waxpoetics, Paste Magazine, 944 Magazine, Okay Player, SashaFrereJones.com (blog of The New Yorker’s pop-music critic), Creative Loafing, URB Magazine, and many others.

Of this work she writes: ‘Earlier this year, I was contacted by Allie Bashuk of Young, Foxy, Free Magazine to shoot local Atlanta artist and musician, Jack Preston for their summer music issue. Young, Foxy, Free is a free quarterly magazine featuring art, photography, music, fashion & designs by local creatives from Athens and Atlanta.

‘For the project, I wanted to collaborate with Jack, who also happens to be a very talented graphic designer. I took Jack’s portrait and had him send me a selection of digital ‘textures’ that he had available, and I then used those textures to create the final compositions. With most of my collage work, I actually cut the different elements out and assemble them by hand, but with this project, I wanted to try to do everything digitally to see what I could get out of it’.
