Baudouin, Paris

by Alison Zavos on December 19, 2010 · 1 comment

Baudouin Paris photographer

Baudouin’s most improbable dreams saw him as a bassist in a New York jazz band circa 1970. However, born in France in 1977 and unable to carry off an afro hairstyle, he decided to become a photographer. Baudouin took his first photos in Ireland. He tried and tested different formats, got to grips with light, mastered black and white photography and worked on framing his subject. He studied the work of his mentors, immersing himself in their universe and techniques, his bedroom walls lined with compositions by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Martin Parr’s color photography and witty images by Elliott Erwitt. Baudouin honed his style; on returning to Paris, he began specializing in color portraits. This work is from his series, ‘I am a parisian lady.’

‘Pahnl‘, a street artist from the UK, has been stenciling since 2003 and actively putting work up on the street since 2006. ‘I take huge influence from comics and street signage but I add my own subversive twist. I aim to make my work interact with it’s environment. In the end though, all I want to do is make people smile’, writes ‘Pahnl’. The stop motion animation, ‘Nowhere Near Here’, uses a combination of light with stencils and long exposure photography to tell the story of a dog running around the city at night, doing whatever a dog does. The animation was first exhibited at the The Herbert, on the 7th October 2010 and features music by the Norwegian electronic music duo, Royksopp.  Of this film he writes,’With well over 300 hours in the making, more than 200 stencils involved and too many cold nights spent outside on my knees getting the shots, I am very happy (and relieved) to finally share this with you. Through the course of shooting ‘Nowhere Near Here’, I have dealt with curious drunks, a dog almost peeing on the camera (the irony is not lost on me, haha), the endlessly suspicious police and even someone nearly running off with a tripod’. Prints and stills from the film are available on Pahnl’s website.

Kahn & Selesnick photography

Richard Selesnick and Nicholas Kahn have been collaborating as Kahn/Selesnick since 1988 on a series of complex narrative photo-novellas and sculptural installations. Their work has evolved into a series of projects involving fictional attributions, narratives, and sculpture. Their staged photography features 360 degree panoramas that create a cinematic sense of place. Placed with their costumes, props, and choice of color, their photographers alter the sense of time. Kahn & Selesnick have held artist residencies at Addison Gallery of American Art in Massachusetts, the Djerrasi Artist Program in California, and Toni Morrison’s Atelier Program at Princeton University. Their solo exhibitions include Schottensumpfkunftig, The REC, Past-Future, Scotlandfuturebog, City of Salt, The Apollo Prophecies, Eisbergfreistadt, and more. The two artists met at the Washington University in St. Louis where both studied photography; they currently reside in New York. Nicholas Kahn lives in a converted wooden Dutch church overlooking the Hudson River, and Richard Selesnick lives in a well-gardened townhouse in Brooklyn built atop a former bog. They are represented by Bernstein & Andriulli.

Alan Powdrill, London

Alan Powdrill photography

Greasy Christmas by award-winning photographer Alan Powdrill focuses on the quintessential workman’s cafe that’s been supplying the all day fry up since the invention of the frying pan. At Christmas time the ‘greasy spoon’ cafe really comes into it’s own as garish seasonal decorations compete with the often neglected interiors and over saturated food on offer. Shot over one month in and around London, Alan has added his unique look and humour to a subject that will become ever more popular as we all struggle with economic woes.
