Mona Kuhn was born in Germany in 1969, raised in Brazil, and now lives in the US. She received her BA from Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1996 and then at The Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles in 1999. Solo exhibitions of her work have been held in Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Munich, Hamburg, São Paulo and San Francisco. These photographs, taken in the Brazilian rainforest and in São Paulo, are from her latest book, Native, published by Steidl. Of this work she writes, ‘After 20 years, I returned to my native country Brazil. My work there began as a personal journey. Metaphorically, I was thinking of a bird that flies back into the forest searching for its abandoned nest. I was looking for answers but forgot the questions along the way. Unexpectedly, that trip lead me through a new set of doors, each one with unfolding stories suspended in time. One of these doors was from Apartment 71 in São Paulo. As it goes in life, one friend introduced me to another, and there it was, a mysterious door opening into an unpredictable stage, where we gathered over a period of time and shared memorable moments.’
